The American Time: Decline in global support for Israel after months of the war on Gaza

Watan-A new survey by the data intelligence and business insights company “Morning Consult” has revealed a significant decline in global support for Israel since the start of the war in Gaza.

According to the mentioned survey, as reported by the American magazine “Time,” the percentage of people viewing Israel positively has globally decreased by an average of 18.5 percentage points between September and December. This decline was observed in 42 out of 43 countries included in the survey.

Negative perspectives

China, South Africa, Brazil, and many other Latin American countries shifted from a positive to a negative perception of Israel.

Several affluent countries that already had clear negative views towards Israel, including Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, experienced sharp declines.

In Japan, the net favorability dropped from -39.9 to -62.0; in South Korea, from -5.5 to -47.8; and in the United Kingdom, from -17.1 to -29.8.

Quoting Sonnet Frisbie, Deputy Head of Political Intelligence at Morning Consult, Time highlighted that the data “shows the difficulty Israel faces now in the international community.”

The war began on October 7th when Palestinian resistance attacked the Israeli occupation that had been besieging the Gaza Strip for many years.

Israeli retaliation led to the deaths of at least 24,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children.

Last week, the International Criminal Court looked into a case brought by South Africa accusing Israel of committing “acts of genocide” in Gaza.

How Public Opinion Changed

As Morning Consult conducts daily online opinion polls, analysts were able to observe how public opinion changed in various countries following the attacks on October 7th.

The company conducts surveys in 43 different countries across all six continents, using them to predict market trends for their clients. The sample size varies from country to country, ranging from 300 to 6,000 responses per month.

The United States remains the only affluent country that still has a net positive view of Israel.

The net favorability only decreased by 2.2 percentage points, from a net favorability of 18.2 to 16, between September and December.
