Algeria's Stance on Palestine

Watan-Algeria has received great praise for its supportive stance on the Palestinian cause, after leading an initiative in the recent period at the Security Council to grant full Palestinian membership in the United Nations.

A comparison was drawn between Algeria’s stance during its membership in the Security Council in 2024/2025 and its championing of the Palestinian cause, compared to the perceived equivocation of the United Arab Emirates.

The United States used its veto power in the United Nations Security Council on Thursday (April 18, 2024) to prevent a resolution that would pave the way for granting Palestine full membership in the United Nations.

Algeria’s resolution, which “recommends that the General Assembly accept Palestine as a member of the United Nations,” was supported by 12 members while the United States opposed it, and Britain and Switzerland abstained from voting.

The United States argues that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state must be through direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, not through action at the United Nations.

Twitter users: “Algeria wipes away the shame of the UAE mission at the United Nations”

Journalist Ahmed Hafsi commented on this comparison: “A garbage dump of history… Algeria wipes away the shame of the UAE mission at the United Nations, which will be remembered for its records of betrayal, positions of humiliation, and submission in the Security Council throughout its membership, and future generations will recount the treachery of Zayed’s offspring.”

The role played by the United Arab Emirates in the Security Council, as it preceded Algeria in this membership, coincided with the beginning of the war on Gaza, and it was largely seen as decorative and functional through which agendas were passed.

Algeria’s positions during its membership in the Security Council, such as the withdrawal of its Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf at the beginning of the Israeli delegate’s speech at the Security Council during the last session held regarding granting Palestine membership in the United Nations, received attention.

Journalist Nazim Al-Mahdawi, editor-in-chief of the “Watan” newspaper, commented on this scene: “Algeria has a strong aversion to Zionists, Algeria does not listen to Zionist talk… Algeria is a formidable Arab fortress against Zionists and a stumbling block against all UAE projects to control North Africa and plunder its wealth.”

Journalist Mohammed Khatib wrote: “Algeria’s stance on the Palestinian issue in the Security Council focused on adhering to the essence of the issue. Palestinians deserve their independent state on their national territory. The Algerian delegate’s speech, on behalf of the Arab Group, clearly summarizes the issue… a truly honorable stance.”

The UAE criticized Gaza and the Resistance

Algeria’s positions were compared to the rhetoric followed by the UAE, which took an antagonistic stance towards the Palestinian cause and sought to demonize Palestinian resistance.

The most notable stance manifested in the speech of the Emirati Minister of State for International Cooperation, Reem Al Hashimi, during a session in the Security Council on the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue, when she described Hamas’ attacks on October 7 as barbaric and heinous.

Boycott UAE Campaign

Following this stance, a hashtag titled “Boycott UAE” trended, as part of a campaign calling for a boycott of products from the Gulf state that are complicit with Israel, in response to its shameful stance regarding the situation in Gaza and its overall position on the Palestinian issue.

The campaign to boycott the UAE and its products came about due to the UAE’s alignment in the Security Council with the Israeli occupation.
