Thousands Protest Trump Nationwide Over Immigration and Democratic Backslide

From New York to San Francisco, Americans Rally Against Trump’s Policies and Call for Impeachment.

Watan-Thousands of Americans took to the streets on Saturday in New York and other major U.S. cities, marking the second day of protests against President Donald Trump within two weeks.

Protesters in New York carried signs with phrases such as “There is no king in America” and “Resist tyranny,” alongside images of the U.S. president with a mustache resembling Hitler’s.

Kathy Valley, 73, the daughter of Holocaust survivors, told AFP: “Democracy is in serious danger.”

She added that what her parents told her about the rise of Nazism in the 1930s “is happening here.”

She considered that “the difference with other fascists (…) is that Trump is too stupid to be effective,” adding that “his team is divided among themselves.”

The protesters mainly denounced the White House’s anti-immigration policies, at a time when the Supreme Court has suspended deportations under the “Alien Enemies Act,” a law Trump relied on that dates back to 1798.

Protesters Rally Coast to Coast Against Trump Policies

In front of the largest library in the United States, close to the iconic Trump Tower owned by the Republican billionaire, protesters chanted: “Immigrants are welcome here.”

Demonstrators also gathered outside the White House in Washington, although apparently in fewer numbers than a previous protest on April 5, which had drawn tens of thousands.

Benjamin Douglas, 41, said the Trump administration is “undermining the rule of law.”

Douglas wore a keffiyeh on his head and held a sign in support of Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian student who was arrested last month in New York and now faces deportation due to organizing protests against the war in Gaza.

Douglas accused the Republican administration of targeting individuals “to fuel hatred against foreigners and undermine long-standing legal protections.”

In the conservative state of Texas (south), a protest was held in Galveston, a city of 50,000 located on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico.

From Protest to Movement: 50501 Takes Shape

Writer Patsy Oliver, 63, said: “This is the fourth protest I’ve participated in.” She added: “I usually wait until the next election, but that’s no longer an option. We’ve already lost so much.”

On the West Coast, hundreds gathered in a San Francisco square to draw the words “Impeach and Resign” in giant letters on the sand.

Reports also emerged of gatherings outside Tesla dealerships—the brand owned by Elon Musk—who was tasked by Trump with reducing the size of the federal civilian workforce.

The mobilization was organized by a group called 50501, symbolizing 50 protests across the 50 U.S. states into one movement opposing the Republican billionaire.

The group explained on its website that it forms “a rapid, decentralized response to the anti-democratic and illegal actions of the Trump administration and its allies…”

According to the group, about 400 protests were planned for the day. It called on millions of people to take to the streets.

However, getting accurate numbers is difficult, as police refuse to give estimates of the turnout.
