Attack on Libyan Prime Minister’s Residence: Stability Threatened Amidst Political Turmoil
Watan-The residence of the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid al-Dbeibah, was targeted in a rocket shell attack, without resulting in any human casualties.
According to Reuters, a Libyan minister, who requested anonymity, stated that the attack only caused some damage.
Loud explosions heard
Meanwhile, two citizens reported hearing loud explosions near the sea in the Andalusia neighborhood of Tripoli, where the Prime Minister’s residence is located. An eyewitness said that security forces, reinforced with vehicles, deployed in the area after the powerful explosions were heard.
Rocket shell attack
Government sources reported that the attack on al-Dbeibah’s residence was carried out by two rockets fired from a drone.
Unknown fate of al-Dbeibah As of now, it is unknown whether al-Dbeibah and his family were inside the house at the time of the attack or not.
Chaos in Libya
Libya has been in a state of instability since the uprising supported by the NATO alliance in 2011, and the country’s fragmentation in 2014 into eastern and western regions, each with its own government. The Government of National Unity, led by al-Dbeibah, was formed through a UN-backed process in 2021.
However, the eastern parliament refused to recognize its legitimacy at the end of that year after the failure of attempts to hold general elections, leading to prolonged political deadlock.
Agreement to form a unified government In early March, three prominent Libyan leaders announced their agreement on the necessity of forming a new unified government to oversee long-awaited elections.
Al-Dbeibah affirmed his commitment not to relinquish power in favor of a new government without holding general elections.
