Algeria and France Face Growing Tensions as the Arrest of Boualem Sansal Triggers Disputes Over Sovereignty, Freedom of Expression, and Colonial Legacy
Watan–Tensions between Algeria and France have escalated to unprecedented levels following statements by French President Emmanuel Macron, in which he criticized the Algerian government for the arrest of French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal.
The Algerian government viewed these remarks as blatant interference in its internal affairs, prompting the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to issue a strongly worded statement rejecting Macron’s comments and condemning France’s attempts to meddle in the country’s sovereign matters.
The Dispute
The conflict erupted after Algerian authorities detained Boualem Sansal on November 16 on charges of “undermining territorial integrity and national unity.” This followed controversial statements in which Sansal alleged that “parts of northwestern Algeria originally belonged to Morocco.” These remarks sparked outrage in Algeria, with the government interpreting them as an attempt to incite discord and question the nation’s unity.
During his annual meeting with French ambassadors, Macron described Sansal’s arrest as “dishonorable,” calling for his release. He further accused Algeria of being “involved in an unethical case” by preventing a seriously ill man from receiving treatment, alluding to Sansal’s health condition. These statements were met with strong rejection by Algeria, which insisted that the case was not about freedom of expression, as portrayed by Paris, but rather a matter of national security.
Algerian President’s Response
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune responded sharply to Macron’s remarks, accusing France of sending “a thief of unknown identity and parentage” (a reference to Sansal) and accused him of distorting historical truths about Algeria’s borders.
A History of Tensions
Macron’s comments have further complicated Algerian-French relations, which have frequently been strained, particularly over historical issues stemming from the colonial era. Algeria has previously summoned its ambassador to Paris multiple times in recent years in response to what it perceived as provocative French statements.
With the current crisis, questions remain about the future of Algeria-France relations and whether Algeria will take additional escalatory measures against Paris.
