Watan-Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares on Thursday rejected Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz’s proposal for Spain to receive Palestinians in the event of their displacement from Gaza.
In an interview with the Spanish radio station “RNE,” Albares stated, “The land of Gaza’s residents is Gaza… and Gaza must be part of the future Palestinian state.”
Israeli media reported that Katz on Thursday ordered the Israeli military to prepare a plan to allow the “voluntary departure” of residents from the Gaza Strip.
These instructions came following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s surprising announcement that the United States plans to take control of Gaza, relocate its residents elsewhere, and transform the area into the “Riviera of the Middle East.”
Katz stated that Spain, Ireland, and Norway—countries that recognized the Palestinian state last year—are “legally obligated to allow any resident of Gaza to enter their territories.”
